Inspiration Behind 'Dance Like We're Making Love'
As I am writing this, I am at my desk vibing to my newest mix ‘Dance Like We’re Making Love.’ I normally listen to my projects multiple times before releasing mainly for two reasons. One reason is to make sure my transitions are flawless. Clean buttery transitions are key because it keeps listeners on their toes. The other reason is to make sure the vibe I am trying to produce is really there. This means when I listen to it the 5th or 6th time, it should still provide the same feeling it did when I listened to it the 1st time.
I came up with the idea of ‘Dance Like We’re Making Love’ earlier this year when I discovered the song Tropicana Fruit Juice by Ycee & Bella. When I first heard it, I had to play it again. And again. And AGAIN! The composition of the song: the beat. the lyrics. the softness of Bella’s voice. Ycee’s harmonies. It made me feel good. I wanted to dance. I HAD to dance. This is the song that’ll make you want to dance with someone’s son. LBVS. What I’m trying to say is that it’s a really great song. And the vibe that I caught while listening, I wanted 40 more minutes of it.
A couple of months after finding this song, I heard Ride The Beat by Shameik Moore. When I heard it, I couldn’t resist moving to the satisfying sound of the high hats over the drums. It gave me the same exact vibe that Tropicana Fruit Juice did. I had it on repeat and danced every time. At this point, I think this was mid-summer, I had 2 songs that went with the theme I had in mind. But again, this was mid-summer and I had ‘Hot Girls vs. Hot Boys: Who Won The Summer?’ mix priority because the summer was coming to an end. So, I kept the idea of 'Dance Like We're Making Love' in the back of my mind while I worked on that.
After Labor Day, I felt the energy shift. Things started to really settle down from the summer. People still ‘turned up’ but it wasn’t the same once the weather changed and the sun started leaving at 6:00pm. On top of that, my transition from the summer was weird. And when I get into a weird space, I turn to music for peace. I listened to music that made me feel good. And of course, I had Tropicana Fruit Juice and Ride The Beat in rotation. During this period, I realized Sweetest Day was approaching as I was looking through my calendar. It’s the day that is known to be the Valentine’s Day for men. AHA! This was the perfect time for me to really put energy into executing this project. This is when I began the hunt to find the right songs that would provide the vibes I’m trying to put into the universe. This is always the challenging part.
My favorite streaming service to find new music is Spotify. I like them because they find out exactly what you like and make a playlist just for you with similar songs. I’m not sure how they hit it on the head every time but they do. Not only that, they’ll introduce you to new and upcoming artists. And one of my goals for my mixes is to showcase talent that does not get much airplay. So, although the ‘hunting’ phase is challenging, I enjoy it. Because you find so much good music. So, I hope you like the song selection for this project.
Each track on 'Dance Like We're Making Love' is a mid-tempo, soca/afrobeat, positive vibe type song. Songs you’ll hear on an island. You should catch the vibe. I want people to get lost in the music and DANCE. Dance with your sweetie. Dance with your friends. Dance by yourself. But catch the vibe. And it’s not just a mix for Sweetest Day. You should be able to play this mix 4 months from now and still catch the vibe. Feel me?
